Hi, friends!! I hope everyone is having a good week so far and I’m happy to see that it’s warming up since our quite chilly first day of spring. It’s been a while since I’ve done a medical post and I’ve had a lot of questions about my new job so I thought I was overdue for an update!
First and foremost, it’s safe to say I LOVE my job!
I know it’s still early in the game, but I feel so thankful that I was able to get into my dream specialty straight out of school. There is definitely a learning curve when starting off in a specialty versus primary care (like family medicine or ER) but it’s not so bad when you’re passionate about the field. I feel comfortable seeing patients, performing histories and physicals but there are SO many different conditions and treatments to learn- not only medical but cosmetic as well. But not to worry, one of the doctors I work with gave me some light reading to do over the next few months. See giant book below. And the studying continues…
Your coworkers can make or break your job experience and this is truly something I always wonder about when starting a new position. Will people be friendly? Will I fit in? Will I be able to ask questions? Will I like the environment? I can honestly say that the providers and medical assistants have been super helpful and welcoming. They have made this transition a smooth one and are always available when I bombard them with questions. And I have a lot 🙂
I have been working about a month & a half and have seen tons of interesting things. The great thing about my practice is that we see a wide variety of dermatology. There are general derm conditions like acne and mole checks, cosmetic treatments like Botox and fillers, laser treatments (I think we have like 25 different devices), MOHS surgery for skin cancer, and even sclerotherapy and laser vein ablation. Phew… told you it was a lot!
For those that have been following for a while, you know that I have been SO ready for a job for so long. I’m finally getting the flow of things at the office and am establishing my routine. The EMR is making more sense and I’m slowly become more self-sufficient. Do I get a little overwhelmed at times? Yes. Mostly because I know I have SO much to study and just so much going on in life in general. My typical days lately consist of work, some kind of workout class after that, cooking dinner/going to a Hornets game, wedding planning/catching up on emails, and a little bit of reading. And now that warm weather is coming, all I want to do is be outside!
I know I have been a little MIA around here (and I hate it!) but once wedding planning comes to a halt, I plan to be back blogging 3 times a week like the good ‘ol days. I miss coming to this space every day but some major life events are happening right now!! Lots of fun wedding posts are coming your way and feel free to let me know if you’d like to see any dermatology-centered posts in the future.
Happy Wednesday!

Yay! I'm so glad you're loving your job and that both the specialty and office seem like a great fit! I'd love to read dermatology related posts – my mama has had several areas of skin cancer removed, so she has long stressed the importance of caring for your skin.

I'm so glad to hear that you are diving right in and enjoying your work! I had a horrible derm issue last year and the MUSC head of the department brought 2 residents in to see it lol. Private email regarding that (and it was on my face…brutal). Cheers to a great new career!

Definitely feel you on the specialty thing. I feel the same in ortho! I know all the textbook diagnoses but then there's how many degrees of angulation can you accept, the million different ways of casting, reductions in office, etc. etc. Glad you are loving it and can't wait to hear more about it in the future!

So happy you are loving the new job! I am a PA student graduating this July and would LOVE to get a job in derm but heard it was extremely hard as a new grad. Any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Congratulations again and thank you for all you do for this blog — its my saving grace during PA school madness!
Jenny Nguyen says
Kristina, you're such an inspiration to me. I am applying to PA school again this April. I love hearing updates about your job, because I have been obsessed with dermatology since childhood. I hope to be like you in about 3 years.

I just discovered your blog – I'm in PA School right now and I want to be in your shoes! Derm has always been a serious interest of mine (I'm also thinking about ortho / sports med), but I just feel my heart called to dermatology. I'm interested in how you managed to land yourself a great specialty job immediately after graduation?
With that aside, congratulations! I'm sure you'll get the hang of things quickly. That's something good about us PAs right? We manage to adapt quickly 😉
Also, Happy wedding planning (I'm getting married next month) – I'll be following you on Instagram now as well!
