Weekending: Last of August

Ahh, Monday. Does anyone else have a relationship with their coffee like this girl, because I know I do (especially on these early mornings). I’m pretty sad that the weekend is over but it’s back to the grind and today marks the start of my 3rd week in general surgery. I can’t believe how fast the time is flying!! Also, tomorrow is September which means fall is just around the corner. PSL, anyone?? Anyways, let’s jump into today’s short & sweet weekend recap!







Ryan came to visit this weekend and this is probably the last time he’ll come to Raleigh until graduation, since my next 2 rotations are in Charlotte. I made reservations at Babylon because I had been telling Ryan about this place for quite some time and I knew Friday would be a great night to dine al fresco. The weather was absolutely perfect and so was the food! Highly recommend the lamb skewers. The night wasn’t complete until we went back home and baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies 🙂









Saturday morning was spent having a big breakfast, lots of coffee, and doing some cleaning around the house. Super exciting… I know, but at least I got to spend it with my favorite person. Later, I attended a Southern Blog Society meet-up at Wendell Falls right outside of Raleigh. It was great to meet some more local NC bloggers and I’ll have more details on that in tomorrow’s post!






Saturday was also my friend Rachael’s birthday. Sarah, Ryan & I headed over to her house that night for celebrations with her friends and family. She and her boyfriend have the cutest little house with the best front porch, complete with a swing. We enjoyed lots of yummy food and even a light show with glow sticks- our friend Eric has mad skills!

I wanted to say thank you again to everyone for all the sweet comments on last Friday’s post, Ryan & I could not be more excited to build our first home together! It’s funny how all of a sudden the wedding talk has shifted to house talk and I actually offered to go to Lowe’s yesterday to look at paint colors and closets. Who am I?!? Haha, it may take a while, but the home decor posts are coming!! Hope y’all enjoy this last day of August 🙂

Coming Soon… Our New Home!!!


Hello, friends and happy Friday!! I know I have been a little MIA this week- adjusting to my surgery schedule (and super early wakeup times) has been a little rough, but I’m happy to report that I got in lots of studying and a few work outs this week. I’m pretty excited for this weekend- Ryan is coming to visit me, we’re celebrating my friend Rachael’s birthday, and I’m attending a blogger event (finally!). Buttttt… there’s something a little more exciting that I want to share with you all…






Ryan & I are building our first home!! 







Townhome to be exact and excited is an understatement. This literally happened within the past day and I’m still kind of in shock. A little background on the story. If y’all remember from my post last week, Ryan & I have been getting a little more serious in the house-hunting department. We looked at some condos uptown, but none of them were quite what we were looking for. We absolutely love the condo we live in now, but are also ready for a change (and more space… obvi!). We weighed the options of a 2 bedroom condo uptown or a 3 bedroom townhouse in South End and we felt that we could definitely see ourselves staying in the townhouse a little longer. 







The other week we looked at some similar townhomes that are almost complete. One of the sales had fallen through so we were contemplating it, but we would’ve had to buy ASAP which wouldn’t be the easiest considering I don’t have a job. We really liked the unit but after visiting if for the second time, Ryan got an email saying it was sold. Yep, that same afternoon. We were just starting to envision ourselves living there so it was a little disappointing, but back to Zillow we went. 







Then luck struck.







There is a similar development of townhouses being built just a few blocks from the ones we visited and Ryan had been looking at them, but only liked one specific floor plan. The 4 units with that floor plan were sold out but he was optimistic and said maybe one of those would fall through too and we would have the perfect place. Well lo and behold… it did! He called me yesterday, told me the details, and said he had to let the realtor know by 5pm. O.M.G!!!!! And just like that we were getting our first house together which will hopefully be finished next summer! 














I seriously couldn’t stop smiling yesterday and there is so much to look forward to! I think that this townhouse will be the perfect fit for us (ours will be the one on the far right). We like the city lifestyle and walkability, but aren’t ready for the maintenance of a single-family home. Not quite yet. The location is great and we will finally have a bed for our guests to sleep in. Hallelujah! As you can tell from the rendering, these will have a pretty modern design and I CANNOT WAIT to decorate and make it feel like a home.

Phew, I know this was a long post but I couldn’t contain my excitement!! I can’t wait to share this whole process from picking out the finishes to picking up our keys. From getting my first job, to marrying Ryan, to getting our first home, 2016 is looking to be a pretty great year!! I’m so very excited to start this new chapter of our lives and some things are just meant to be. Hope y’all have a great weekend and thanks for reading 🙂

Back to School


Last Monday was my last official “back to school” day… ever! I may have not gone to an actual class, but I started my 10th rotation which officially made me a PA-3 (graduation countdown is at 109 days people!!). And I may have said this my senior year of college but… this was my REAL last first day of college. Back to school also means that fall is just around the corner. It’s that time to refresh your wardrobe and get super cute planners and school supplies… even if you’re not actually heading back to school.  Here are a few accessories that I’ve had my eye on that would be perfect for the college girl OR the working girl.

Notebooks


I always have a big notebook and a tiny notepad in my work bag at all times.  I don’t really need anymore right now, but I can’t help to eye this pretty set from Rifle Paper Co. at Target. The botanical designs are so pretty!






Coffee Mug




I remember the days when I didn’t even like coffee and now I’m straight up addicted. I don’t hate it though. I’m actually in need of a new mug and I will definitely be getting this Kate Spade travel mug soon. The gold stripes are everything!





Scarves


Fall means… scarf season!! Extra points for those that can double as a blanket because I know y’all love a good multipurpose item. This one has stripes and pom-poms, what’s not to love?








Loafers




Flats are made for walking. Well, unfortunately some can be uncomfortable (ahem, Tory Burch Revas that I’m still breaking in) but you can usually count on a loafer to be comfy and cute at the same time.  That’s why they have become my trusty work shoes, especially when I’m standing most of the day. These plaid loafers from Sole Society are so adorable and would add a fun touch to any outfit. 






Tote


Even if you aren’t carrying school supplies, who doesn’t love adding a new bag to their collection? I saw Zelle carrying it a few weeks ago and I’ve been wanting to get it ever since. It’s super roomy and looks way more expensive than it is. Yet another great Target find!






iPhone Case


Because you can never have too many cases, right?? I love the entire Sonix collection from Nordstrom. From flowers to pineapples to seashells, they have a case to fit any personality.






My weekend was pretty relaxing and I’m perfectly okay with that. If you follow me on Snap Chat (khendley), you may have seen that my friends and I had a yard sale. Err… attempted to have. We had a grand total of two customers and I only made $12 (10 of which were because my friend Vaishali bought two of my dresses). Better luck next time, I guess! I’m off to week two of surgery and please excuse my absence on the blog in advance- this is one of the harder tests that we take this year so I’m going to take this week to do lots of reading, practice suturing, and go to sleep at a decent hour so I can get up super early for surgeries. Hi friends and happy Tuesday! Today’s post is all about the simplicity of black and white. It’s that go-to combo to throw on when you feel like you have nothing to wear, but still want to look chic! When you’re wearing solids, it’s the perfect time to throw in a colorful or patterned piece like this leopard clutch– which will be on heavy repeat this fall.

Life Lately


Oh. My. Gosh. Where did my vacation go?!? It was super nice to be back in Charlotte for a week and I always think it’s going to be “so relaxing”… until I realize all the things I have to get done. Doctor appointments, wedding appointments, house appointments… It has been one busy little week! As usual, I’m linking up with my girls Biana & Meghan so let’s get right into the recap!

Last week’s cake tasting went well- definitely a nice afternoon pick-me-up. Ryan, Logan & I tried 5 of the most popular flavors at the shop and my favorites were probably the almond with hazelnut and vanilla with raspberry filling. Yum!! They have the cutest cake designs on display- how adorable is that purse cake?!? And the Naked palette… I can’t even!


Speaking of weddings, there is a new bride-to-be in the house!! I want to wish one of my besties Ashton a big congratulations on her engagement. We all met up on Friday for drinks at 5Church (where we celebrated my engagement as well). Looks like 2016 is going to be a busy year! 








In other exciting news, my blogging productivity (and Internet use in general) is about to get much better. This post is coming to you from my new MacBook Air!! Somebody was a little sneak and told me I had a surprise coming on Friday, but I had no idea it would be a new computer. I have been wanting needing a new one for quite a while now- my 5 1/2 year old MacBook Pro was on its last leg and there were so many times where I almost threw out the window because it was so slow. I may be biased, but can I say fiancé of the year?!








What else have Ryan & I been up to? Looking for a new place!! We’re not planning to move before the wedding, but if the perfect place becomes available we’ll definitely be open to it! So far we have looked at some new townhomes as well as some older condos uptown. I absolutely love where we live now- you can’t beat the location, the pool, or the gym (and the views), but the one thing that’s lacking is space. I think it’s so fun to look at places and figure out what you do and don’t like- the most important thing is that it needs to feel like home! 






Today I start my 10th rotation in PA school (omg!) in general surgery. This can sometimes be a very mentally and physically demanding rotation, but I’m ready for the challenge. This is my last rotation in Raleigh before I move back to Charlotte for good (insert happy dance!). Hope y’all have a fabulous Monday!

Wedding Wednesday: Cake Inspiration


Life is short, eat dessert first. Don’t you just love that saying? Unfortunately, this can’t technically happen at a wedding where there’s a cake to be cut, but I can’t deny my sweet tooth. And Ryan too… that boy can put away some cookies and ice cream! That being said, we are super excited for our first cake tasting this afternoon.

I want a nice cake, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t have to be extravagant. The most important thing is that it’s delicious, right?! I still (not so fondly) remember some weddings that had dry, tasteless cake… bleh! You may care that it’s pretty, but your guests are more concerned with how it tastes and that’s the truth. But hey, you don’t have to choose! I am completely inexperienced in the baking department so I can’t even imagine how much time and skill go into making these edible pieces of art.





A cake is a chance to show your personality, get creative, and even incorporate your wedding colors. I seem to be drawn to more simplistic and modern designs so I thought I’d share with you some of my current cake inspiration!

Depending on the style of the cake, I would love to have a fun little cake topper. I’m loving the swirly look of the gold calligraphy and wouldn’t they make the perfect cake accessory?? There are so many options out there- cakes, cupcakes, donuts, & dessert bars. To all my married ladies out there, I’d love to hear any tips or advice on picking a wedding dessert for your guests. Now I just have to prepare my sweet tooth for this afternoon… wish us luck!!
