Starting Solids with Little Spoon

Now that Porter is 6 months old, we have officially checked off the milestone of starting baby food! This has been such a fun experience to watch him try new foods in his highchair and I just can’t get over how quickly he’s growing. We recently discovered Little Spoon, a baby food delivery service that offers both freshness and convenience when feeding your babe. Breastmilk and formula provide the main source of nutrition for infants up to a year old, so starting solids is mostly about the practice of eating. Babies get used to eating from a spoon, chewing and swallowing plus they get to explore a variety of colors and textures. And it’s so fun to watch them eat! I love the faces Porter makes when trying new foods (see below!) and cheering him on when he holds the spoon or finishes his meal.

I will say that I’ve never been good at meal prepping for myself and honestly never had any intentions of making/pureeing my own baby food. That’s where Little Spoon comes in! I was so excited when I discovered this baby food meal delivery box. Their organic baby blends are delivered every 2 weeks and there are so many unique flavors to choose from. I also like that they use cold pressure instead of heat processing which keeps more nutrients in the food and there are no preservatives. You can refrigerate the meals up to 2 weeks or freeze up to 3 months. Oh, and each jar has a little spoon… so cute!

We got our first box right after Porter started oatmeal so we opted for the single ingredient blends (apples, mango, zucchini) but they have so many unique combinations to choose from. He loved pears but wasn’t quite sure about mango the first day (maybe because it’s so tangy) but ended up loving it! Don’t get discouraged if your baby doesn’t like certain foods, it can take many many tries before they develop a taste for it. And there are some days when he may take 5 bites or he may finish the whole jar. Porter has tried a few of the purees from the grocery store and while there are some organic options, the variety of flavors and obvious freshness of Little Spoon is what sets it apart.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that Ryan & I love to get Hello Fresh and Freshly delivered for our meals so it was neat to see a baby food equivalent. I think this is a great option if 1) don’t want to make your own purees, 2) are a working parent and want to save some time and 3) want an option that’s more fresh and nutritious than what you’d see on a grocery store shelf. No matter which way you go, fed is best and discovering solids should be a fun and stress-free process. Our next box should be here this week and I’m excited to continue this food journey with Porter!
