Life is short, eat dessert first. Don’t you just love that saying? Unfortunately, this can’t technically happen at a wedding where there’s a cake to be cut, but I can’t deny my sweet tooth. And Ryan too… that boy can put away some cookies and ice cream! That being said, we are super excited for our first cake tasting this afternoon.
I want a nice cake, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t have to be extravagant. The most important thing is that it’s delicious, right?! I still (not so fondly) remember some weddings that had dry, tasteless cake… bleh! You may care that it’s pretty, but your guests are more concerned with how it tastes and that’s the truth. But hey, you don’t have to choose! I am completely inexperienced in the baking department so I can’t even imagine how much time and skill go into making these edible pieces of art.
A cake is a chance to show your personality, get creative, and even incorporate your wedding colors. I seem to be drawn to more simplistic and modern designs so I thought I’d share with you some of my current cake inspiration!

Sugar Flowers
Stripes
Monogram
Color
Swiss Dots
Last but not least, this one might take the cake… literally!! I’m in love with all of the patterns and textures, almost too pretty to eat!
Depending on the style of the cake, I would love to have a fun little cake topper. I’m loving the swirly look of the gold calligraphy and wouldn’t they make the perfect cake accessory?? There are so many options out there- cakes, cupcakes, donuts, & dessert bars. To all my married ladies out there, I’d love to hear any tips or advice on picking a wedding dessert for your guests. Now I just have to prepare my sweet tooth for this afternoon… wish us luck!!

I love all your inspiration ideas for the cake!! I custom designed ours and loved it!! I wish the gold name toppers were a thing two years ago (they probably were but not as popular) because I totally would have done that! I can tell you what shop we ordered the cake topper from for the wedding we just did – she had the MR & Mrs one with their new last name – it was gorgeous! xo, biana –BlovedBoston

What gorgeous inspirations, lady! I like you had a custom design and the most important thing was taste. I attended a wedding last year where the cake [and cupcakes] were dry and tasteless. Ugh, it was such a let down.
We had stripes of color and then a plain white piping pattern on our cake. I had always wanted flowers as my topper and I loved the bright pops of color. Everyone had cupcakes at their tables so the cake was just more for show and the head table. It was delicious a year latter, too.

Loving all of your inspiration! I'm not a huge fan of fondant so when I chose my cake I knew I wanted buttercream frosting. I ended up going with a very simple design with Swiss dots on one layer and a filigree type piping on another layer and then finally a plain layer. It tasted AMAZING! I can't wait to see what you guys choose!

All of these cakes are GORGEOUS! But I totally agree, it really has to taste good. We did champagne cake with a strawberry filling and I still dream about it! Have so much fun this afternoon!

I love the simplistic, yet chic look for a cake and agree on taste being most important. If you can get a pretty cake that tastes awesome, then you're golden! Looooove that last cake, it's so romantic and pretty. Test out some almond cake, it's so light and airy tasting, I helped my friend pick that when I went with her on her cake tasting. As far as toppers go, I found this awesome shop that creates custom clay figures of brides & grooms that also double as a keepsake, the shop's name is Trinasclaycreations if you want to take a look at that :)!Thanks for linking up!!!

I can honestly say I haven't once been to a wedding where the wedding cake blew me away. That being said, I decided to have all our favorite homemade desserts instead. His grandma made her famous lemon pies in small individual pie crusts, we had homemade red velvet, carrot cake, hershey cake, pineapple upside down cake, and a s'mores bar which was a HUGE hit. Between our desserts and our sushi bar during cocktail hour, we have had SO MANY people say we had the best food and desserts they have ever had at a wedding. We don't have pictures of the perfect, huge wedding cake, but we had happy guests and it was a way to really personalize the reception. Best decision ever!

I loved cake tasting & designing our cake! You're right that you want a cake that is pretty but you want a yummy cake for your guests too! We ended up using alternating layers of design and kept it VERY simple & classic and I loved how it turned out! The biggest piece of advice I have is to pick the flavors YOU want! I struggled so much with using white cake for the groom's cake instead of in the main one but there were two other flavors that we just liked so much better and used those in our actual wedding cake.

These cakes are so pretty! When it came down to my wedding though, I realized that I actually don't really like eating cake (gasp!). For our wedding, the cake we cut into was a French gateau, called the Frasier, and then we did a dessert bar full of mini cakes, tarts, and truffles. People loved choosing their own. Just a suggestion, however, no one can deny how pretty the traditional cake looks!

All of these are gorgeous, but the stripe is my favorite. Wedding cake is always my favorite part of weddings as I have a major sweet tooth. Now I'm craving cake!

Loving these inspiration photos!! The cake toppers are also super adorable! A friend of mine had a series of different height hearts (with glitter on them) and it was adorable, too.

I just got married 2 months ago tomorrow and this was the exact same issue we had at our wedding. I didn't really care about the cake(I wanted cupcakes and pie), so I let my fiance take the reins on this. He ultimately chose to get our cake from Wegmans. We went with the white round hand done cakes and for then entire wedding of 200 people our total was $125 for everything. Cookies and cakes alike. I still can't believe it and am a bit sheepish at admitting this fabulous deal. Well done honey!
My advice would be to shop around. I was not even thinking of going with a non bakery for our cake and when Andrew brought up Wegmans-we tried it and it worked.
Oh, and as to how it all turned out, I have pictures, but they aren't yet uploaded to our family blog, so I can email you them if you'd like.
Good luck

So exciting! I'm sure the cake tasting was fun *excuse my tardiness to this post*, and you guys got to sample lots of yumminess! I love the way fondant looks, but not the way it tastes so we went with buttercream, and I had the dots on one layer, and sequin tipped stones on the other two to give it some bling, and I loved how it came out! Loving all of your inspiration pics especially the sugar flowers and the stripes! Can't wait to see what you choose, you honestly can't go wrong with any of these picks!
